Jeg har vært deltagene på importørmøter og testturer for vindsporter siden siden H. Engen tok meg med til å besøke tyske Sailboard i 16 års alderen, dvs 1983. De første årene var det mest å høre på designerne og de mer erfarne importørene og deres idéer som sammen styrte utviklingen. Denne praksisen har jeg hatt privillegiet å fortsette. Under møtene gir jeg jevnlig input fra dere, teamutøvere og egne erfaringer. Av og til hører hele verden på lille Norge, andre ganger ikke.
For et par dager siden fikk jeg en artig prototyp fra en kunde som mente han hadde et viktig innlegg i framtidens design. (dessverre var ideén ikke så revolusjonerende som han håpet på, men takk likevel!). Det er en av disse tingene med å virkelig føle lidenskap for noe at man får ideér og vil bidra og løse problemer. De fleste som seiler brett eller båt eller har en dings de ser forbedringspotensiale i skjønner hva jeg mener. Vi gir oss aldri i vår søken etter ytelse eller perfeksjon.
I Juni tilbringer jeg mine årlige timer med designere som Sebastian Wentzel (Fanatic brett) Kai Hopf (North Sails) og Ralf Grösel (North Kites) og en rekke industridesignere, teamutøvere og produkt utviklere som til sammen skaper leketøyene vi setter pris på. Designteamene presenterer sine løsninger, mens vi (importørene) prøver å plukke de fra hverandre og forbedre de. Vanligvis ligger designerene et stykke foran oss, så det er sjelden vi sender et produkt tilbake til verkstedet.
Men altså dette skulle egentlig bare være en liten tekst om Sebastian Wentzel og testresultatene i år. Han var den første som satte brettdesign i system og revolusjonerte prototypeproduksjon ved å skanne inn alle outlines og rockerlinjer og effekten av disse i 2004. Dataene på alle brett han har bygget siden 1999 bygde han inn i et dataprogram som styrte en CNC maskin og voilá, presise prototyper basert på fakta, begynte å rulle ut. Resultatene ser vi dag på en fantastisk jevn utvikling hvor skrogene holder seg aktuelle i mange flere år enn hos konkurrentene. Nøkkelordet er større bruksområde gjennom bedre design. Selv familebrettene han leverer i form av Viper familien har rockerlinjen fra Shark som har trolig gitt verdens raskeste bruksvennlige familebrett. Det er moro å tenke på for nybegynneren som plutselig oppdager at “begynnerbrettet” som først var tenkt å bare lære på, faktisk løsner skikkelig og holder følge med langt dyrere og mer “avanserte” brett. Finnevalget og riggen er halve ytelsen, så bytter man til samme som en på en Shark, holder man faktisk følge!
En annen styrke med Sebastian er at han bor i Portogal, men tester også på Garda og Sør Afrika. For oss som seiler i fjorder med vindbølger er dette uhyre viktig. For solskinnseilerene på vestlandet, er forskjellene mindre. De kan ha det helt fint med et brett som er utviklet på Hawaii. Når det koker i fjorden derimot, må vi ha noe som er lettere å holde nede på vannet og planer i motbakke.
Teamutøverene har stor kontroll over high performance modellene fordi de seiler på serieproduserte brett i konkurranser (noe svært få av konkurrentene får til). Så det er viktig å huske på at materialsammensetningen og produksjonsmetoden også krever sin mann. For Fanatic sin del har de alltid drevet teknologien fremover, noe alle produsenter har glede av, selv om de ikke får tak i produksjons hemmelighetene før et år eller tre senere. Resultatet er sterkere, lettere brett og i år også fantastiske fargepaletter som ikke var mulig å lage i fjor. (kopiene er allerde på vei).
Min personlige favoritt (jeg veier 88kg) når forholdene er fine, dvs seilstørrelese 5.4-6.4 er Freewave 95. Er det lite vind seiler jeg gjerne en Ray 140 eller Falcon 123 med S-Type 8,4 eller Ram 9m2. Er det skikkelige forhold seiler jeg helst en twinser 78 eller quad 84, er det panserføre i vindbølger er det en singlefin jeg liker best. Smaken er som baken, men når jeg prøver andre designere, finner jeg ofte gode ting for fine forhold (langt mellom bølgene/Lista/Jæren/utlandet), men ingen gir meg like presis kontroll og stort bruksområde som sakene fra Sebastian. Surf Magasinene er heldigvis enig med meg, her er testrapportene så langt i sesongen. Enjoy!
